The Nephilm Kings in Sheol - The Curious Case of Ezekiel 32:21- TOG EP 145

Ezekiel 23 contains a polemic against the Pharaoh of Egypt being drawn down to the pit, Sheol, by the sword. Ezekiel mentions an encounter with fallen chiefs in Sheol. Are these chiefs, the giant kings—the Nephilim? We will explore what the Septuagint reveals and examine peer-reviewed discussions on this curious case of Ezekiel 32:21.

Ezekiel 32:20-23

English Standard Version

20 They shall fall amid those who are slain by the sword. Egypt is delivered to the sword; drag her away, and all her multitudes.

21 The mighty chiefs shall speak of them, with their helpers, out of the midst of Sheol: ‘They have come down, they lie still, the uncircumcised, slain by the sword.’

22 “Assyria is there, and all her company, its graves all around it, all of them slain, fallen by the sword,

23 whose graves are set in the uttermost parts of the pit; and her company is all around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who spread terror in the land of the living.

AFG2SW - Chapter 02 - In the Beginning - The Three Falls - Part DEUX - TOG EP 98

In Tales of Glory Episode 98, we dive into A Field Guide to Spiritual Warfare, Chapter 02 - Part DEUX. We are in the second part of a two-part episode and go through Chapter 2 of A Field Guide to Spiritual Warfare. I will present the material in Genesis 1-3 from the perspective of theology and research 14 years after I wrote the book. I will also present the case for the three falls in the book of Genesis. We are very familiar with the one in Genesis 3. But there are two more, and these events define the angelology and demonology in the Septuagint and the Hebrew texts. This episode of Tales of Glory has some exciting material as we continue through the book on our podcast workshop and equipping.

Joel Kline provided some excellent feedback to this episode. I believe Joel was commenting on Genesis 3:8.

8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

Great info!

I have a copy of Kingdom Prologue. These are excellent references cited by Joel.

Thank you, Joel!

There are two published sources, Kingdom Prologue (1993/ 2000 2nd print edition) and Images of the Spirit (1980), books from Meredith G Kline that go into depth on his studies of Gen 3:8-13.  There is about 10 pages in chapter 4 of Images of the Spirit that take a deeper dive into the broader context of this judgement seen in Eden.  I'll scan and email you these pages from the Images of the Spirit book, but for those interested in a shorter synopsis, I'll write out a portion from Kingdom Prologue here in this comment from Chapter 5, Section 2 "Judgement Day which can be found on pages 128-129 of the 2000 print edition. ::

Chapter 5 part 2 "Judgement Day
"God had brought Satan to the judgement tree to be damned.  To man had been assigned the awesome role of standing at God's viceregent at the place of judgement and consigning the great adversary to perdition.  Man, however, had utterly failed in his messianic mission.  He had declared good to be evil and evil to be good.  He had broken his covenant with God and made league with the devil.  But 'be not deceived; God is not mocked; and whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.  For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption, but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting' (Galations 6:7,8) ((this was obviously the passage Jesus read to the former african witch doctor in his dream that you've shared about before))  The Lord God therefore came to the place of judgement in Eden to enter into a covenant lawsuit with his offending vassals.  Moreover, Satan was not to escape through man's malfeasance.  It was also the purpose of the Lord's judicial appearance that he should himself pronounce the devil's doom".

"Another factor, all important, affected the particular character of the judicial sentences imposed on both man and Satan.  According to the principle of justice expressed in the creational covenant the rebellious human vassals might have been consigned then and there to God's eternal wrath along with the devil.  But the Metapolis mission (the great commission) was not to be aborted before human history had scarcely started.  In eternal covenant with the Son, the Father in heaven had decreed that a new mankind should be redeemed out of fallen mankind and emerge at the consummation of redemptive history as God's holy temple, New Jerusalem.  To make room for this history of redemption, this execution of final judgement against men and demons must be postponed until a later hour.  God's judgement on the covenant-breakers in Eden did not, therefore, assume the form of a final total curse, nor did his condemnation of Satan have the effect of casting him at once into the lake of fire prepared for him and his angels".

A. Parousia of the Glory-Spirit

1. The Spirit of the Day
"Adapting the mode of his self-revelation to the judicial purpose of his coming the Lord approached the judgement site in the awesome glory of his theophanic Presence.  So he ever comes on the day of judgement, the day of the Lord, the day of the covenant servants' accounting before the Face of the Lord.  It is that kind of fearful advent that is reported in Genesis 3:8

"The key phrase describing God's approach through the garden, traditionally translated 'in the cool of the day,' should be rendered (instead) 'as the Spirit of the day.'  "Spirit" here denotes the theophanic Glory, as it does in Genesis 1:2 and elsewhere in Scripture.  And "the day" has the connotation it often has in the prophets' forecasts of the great coming judgement (cf also Judges 11:27 and 1 Cor 4:3).  Here in Genesis 3:8 is the original day of the Lord which served as the prototypal mold in which subsequent pictures of other days of the Lord were cast.  Such a day is one of divine epiphany.  The final day is preeminently the day of our Lord's parousia, the day of his presence as the personal revelation of the Glory with the clouds and angels of heaven.  Significantly, "panim", face or presence, one of the biblical designations of the Glory-Spirit, is referred to in Genesis 3:8, and accordingly what is depicted there is nothing less than the primal parousia.  On the original day of the Lord in Eden, God's parousia-advent was in the theophanic mode of "the Spirit (Presence) of the day (of judgement)".

"Trumpeting the advent of the divine Presence -- at Sinai, at Pentecost, at the parousia of Jesus, at every day of the Lord -- is the fearful sound of the voice of the Lord, the thunderclap of the approaching theophanic storm-chariot.  It was by precisely this arresting signal that the primal parousia was heralded.  Alarmed by this sound of God's coming (v 8a), the man and his wife sought escape (of all places) in the area of the judgement tree (v 8b).

Tales of Glory Episode 05 - The Giants and the Nephilim

In our fifth episode of Tales of Glory we look at the amazing account of giants in the Bible. Who were they? Were they even human? What is the small disclaimer in Genesis 6 about the sons of God taking for themselves the daughters of men?
Are the angelic beings in chains in 1 Peter and Jude, the satanic angels who broke from their dwelling place and defiled God's creation of man?
We will look into this controversial and hot conspiracy theorist subject from a Biblical perspective. How does the Bible give testimony to this strange account in Genesis 6? Let's dive in with a truly amazing topic in Tales of Glory - Episode 05, "The Giants and the Nephilim".

There were GIANTS in the land!

Who were the Nephilim?
Are there races of giants in the Bible?
Were there evil angels who tried something far more sinister than Satan and are now in a prison of eternal darkness for their rebellion?
Did Peter and Jude believe the Nephilim were offspring of evil angels and human women?
Did God flood the earth because of these evil abominations?

These topics are examined in the FG2HR - The Nephilim!

Who and What Were the Nephilim?

Genesis 6:4 - The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
The Lord spoke to Moses and told him to send one son from each of the tribes of Israel to go as spies into the land of Canaan. After 40 days of exploring the new land, the spies returned to give a report to Moses and Aaron. The spies reported the good news that land was flowing with milk and honey. They also reported some bad news -there were giants in the land! They saw the Nephilim and they feared them.
Who were the Nephilim and why did God’s people fear them?
The Nephilim are one of those intriguing mysteries of the Bible. The existence of the Nephilim is first revealed in Genesis 6:4. The Nephilim are introduced prior to Noah and the great flood. The implications are that the Nephilim and their offspring were evil and the earth needed to be cleansed of them.
Despite the flood wiping out everything on earth, the Nephilim supernaturally reappear and become an obstacle for the Israelites. Causing them to disobey God for not taking possession of the land.

There Were Giants in the Land

Theologians have been debating since the first century of the early church as to what the Nephilim were. Some consider the Nephilim to be nothing more than a race of mighty men. The late, Dr. J. Vernon McGee, in his classic radio series, Thru the Bible, held the opinion that the Nephilim were merely men.
These were not monstrosities; they were men. The record makes it clear that the giants were in the earth before this took place, and it simply means they were offspring of outstanding individuals.[1]
Another age old argument is that the Nephilim literally are a race of giants. Encounters with giants occur throughout the Old Testament. The most notable giant being the Philistine Goliath could very well have been a descendant of the Nephilim.
Other giants appeared in the Old Testament, the Rephaites (Rephaim), the Anakites (the sons of Anak are a part of the Nephilim, Numbers 13:33), and the Zamzumites. In the book of Genesis, chapter 14, the War of the Kings, King Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him defeated the Rephaim, the Zuzim and the Emim. Deuteronomy 2:10 describes the Emim as people as great, as numerous, as tall and as powerful as the Anakim (the offspring of the Nephalim). These race of giants were all genetically related.
Deuteronomy 2:11 - 11 Like the Anakim, they are also regarded as Rephaim, but the Moabites call them Emim.
The significance of this battle with the kings, in the book of Genesis, reveals that the Nephilim were roaming the earth at the time of Abraham. Reading the scripture as the infallible word of God we have an enigma on our hands. In Deuteronomy, we have King Og, the last of the remnant of the Rephaim, who had a burial bed 13 1/2 feet long (9 cubits x 1.5 ft/cubit = 13.5 feet).
Deuteronomy 3:11-11 (For only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaim. Behold, his  bedstead was an iron bedstead; it is in Rabbah of the sons of Ammon. Its length was nine cubits and its width four cubits by ordinary cubit.)
The question arises, where did these giants come from?

The Sons of God and the Daughters of Men

There is significant evidence in the Bible that there were a race of giants in the land. The giants existed with Abraham and were wiped out of human history probably around the time of King David. The giants weren’t genetic anomalies there were races of them. Genesis 6:4 doesn’t shed any light on the matter at all. The scripture explains the Nephilim came into existence when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Who were the sons of God?
Theologians have two differing beliefs regarding who the sons of God are. The first account is that the sons of God are actually the descendants of Seth and the daughters of men are the descendants of Cain. The weight of the argument is that this intermarrying is in violation of the Law.
Deuteronomy 7:1-4 - 1“When the Lord your God brings you into the land where you are entering to possess it, and clears away many nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and stronger than you, and when the Lord your God delivers them before you and you defeat them, then you shall utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them and show no favor to them. Furthermore, you shall not intermarry with them; you shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor shall you take their daughters for your sons. For [they will turn your sons away from following Me to serve other gods; then the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you and He will quickly destroy you.
The basis of this argument doesn’t readily explain as to why the descendants were physical giants.
The second theological belief is that the sons of God refers to fallen angels. The foundation of this belief is in the context that “the sons of God “ are used in the scripture. The Hebrew  translation is Ben Elohim, which literally is, the sons of God.  Theologians who are of the point of view that the sons of God are angels, provide the argument using the context the sons of God are mentioned in the book of Job,  Job 1:6, 2:1, and 38:7. Again, the Hebrew contextual translation here is ben elohim, the sons of God.
Job 1:6 - Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.
In this context, the sons of God are referring to angels in heaven, before the throne of God.
Job 2:1 - 1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord.
And in Job 38:7,  the contextual reference is angels.
Job 38:7 - When the morning stars sang together
And all the sons of God shouted for joy?
In each of these scripture verses in the book of Job, ben elohim, is referring to angels. The scripture alludes to the sons of God as being angels.  Now we’ll examine what the early church believed.

Accepted Belief in the Antiquities

Who or what did the early church believe the sons of God to be? Some clues surface in early writings and in New Testament scripture that the accepted belief was that the sons of God were in fact angels. The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus writes in his works, about Genesis 6:4,
NOW this posterity of Seth continued to esteem God as the Lord of the universe, and to have an entire regard to virtue, for seven generations; but in process of time they were perverted, and forsook the practices of their forefathers; and did neither pay those honors to God which were appointed them, nor had they any concern to do justice towards men. But for what degree of zeal they had formerly shown for virtue, they now showed by their actions a double degree of wickedness, whereby they made God to be their enemy. For many angels of God accompanied with women, and begat sons that proved unjust, and despisers of all that was good, on account of the confidence they had in their own strength; for the tradition is, that these men did what resembled the acts of those whom the Grecians call giants. But Noah was very uneasy at what they did; and being displeased at their conduct, persuaded them to change their dispositions and their acts for the better: but seeing they did not yield to him, but were slaves to their wicked pleasures, he was afraid they would kill him, together with his wife and children, and those they had married; so he departed out of that land.
William Whiston, who provided this translation in, The Works of Josephus, in 1736, made the comment, “This notion, that the fallen angels were, in some sense, the fathers of the old giants, was the constant opinion of antiquity.”.[2]
In Terry Law’s book, the truth about Angels, he writes that the “sons of God” was accepted as referring to angels by the ancient Jewish synagogues and by Hellenistic Jews at and before the time of Christ. The Christian church also accepted that the sons of God referred to fallen angels until the fourth century.[3]
An early church Christian author, Tertullian of Carthage, cited 1 Enoch, in his works, Of Idolatry, (around the year 190 AD),
Enoch had before foretold that the “the daemons and the spirits of angels fell away, would change into idolatry all the elements, the whole gear of the world, the things which are contained in heaven, in the sea, in the earth, so that they should be consecrated in the stead of God, in opposition to the Lord.”[4]
Tertullian is quoting an ancient book, 1 Enoch, which was not included in the 66 books of the Canonical Bible.
In the New Testament, books 2 Peter and Jude, also make reference to the angels who left their habitation and took earthly wives. These writings also illuminate the notion that the early church believed the sons of God were fallen angels in the book of Genesis.
2 Peter 2:4-5 - 4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment; 5 and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly;
The author of Jude writes,
Jude 1:6-7 - 6 And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day, 7 just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.
Tertullian knew that the epistle of Jude was specifically quoting the book 1 Enoch. Bruce Metzger cites in his works on, The Canon of the New Testament: It’s Origin, Development and Significance, that the epistle of Jude appealed to Tertullian because of its testimonial to the authority of Enoch.[5]  As you can see, the book of 1 Enoch was well known in the first and second century churches and was in the synagogues at the time of the ministry of Jesus Christ.
Both in 2 Peter and the book Jude, the authors are referring to angels already in chains in eternal darkness, awaiting their judgment. We know Satan and his demons are roaming the earth causing chaos until their time of judgment when Jesus Christ returns. So who are these angels in chains? It seems to have been common knowledge in the synagogues and early church who these angels were. Many theologians believe the two authors are quoting another book, then common to the synagogues and churches, the book of 1 Enoch. The book of Enoch raises more questions then answers and was obviously not included in the 66 canonical books of the Bible.  To muddy the waters here, it is no mystery that the Peter and the author of Jude are referencing the book of 1 Enoch. This book is presumed to be authored by the same Enoch who appears in Genesis 5.
Genesis 5:18:21-24 - 21 Enoch lived sixty-five years, and became the father of Methuselah. 22 Then Enoch walked with God three hundred years after he became the father of Methuselah, and he had other sons and daughters. 23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24 Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
In the book of 1 Enoch, in chapter 6,we see a similar passage to the scripture in Genesis 6:4.
1 Enoch  Book 1 Ch. 6-  1 And it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born unto them beautiful and comely daughters.
2 And the angels, the children of the heaven, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: 'Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men
3 and beget us children.
Keep in mind here the book of 1 Enoch is not the smoking gun that proves these were angels. It only provides some evidence that the common belief in Jewish antiquity is that the sons of God were angels and that we have some evidence the angels may have attempted pro creation with earthly women. We leave the book of 1 Enoch as nothing more than that. I believe the book of 1 Enoch raises more questions than answers, which is why it was probably left out of the canonical books of the Bible. But we must also keep in mind it was in the synagogues and quoted in our New Testament in the book of Jude.

Can Angels Procreate with Man?

That is the question of which we’ll never receive a true answer to until we go to our glory and sit through the new arrival 101 presentation in Heaven. From an earthly stand point and from the frontlines of battle in our ministry – I do believe this is possible. Our ministry has been involved in ministering to satanic ritual abuse survivors and people dealing with incubus-succubus (raping demon) manifestations. It is through these ministry experiences that I know demons are a part of rape, oppressive spiritual rape and ritual rape. In these cases, demons manifest and rape individuals. A female looking demon, a succubus, can collect genetic material from a man. Demons can manipulate DNA, look at horrific illnesses and cancer. Angels under Satan possess supernatural God given wisdom beyond the scope of our brightest men. What we Christians don’t consider is not if this can be done, but how horrific it is when it is done. In ritual abuse, some women are used as nothing more than breeders. The raping by demons is violent and is commonly done on children during these rituals.

Demons and the Nephilim

There are several common beliefs out there as to the origin of demonic spirits. I strongly subscribe to the belief that the demons are in fact fallen angels who rebelled with Lucifer. However, there are theologians who believe that demons are the disembodied spirits of the Nephilim that died in the great flood. Those who subscribe to this belief cite the book of 1 Enoch.
1 Enoch Book 1 Ch 15 - 8 And now, the giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called evil spirits upon
9 the earth, and on the earth shall be their dwelling. Evil spirits have proceeded from their bodies; because they are born from men and from the holy Watchers is their beginning and primal origin;
10 they shall be evil spirits on earth, and evil spirits shall they be called. [As for the spirits of heaven, in heaven shall be their dwelling, but as for the spirits of the earth which were born upon the earth, on the earth shall be their dwelling.]
11 And the spirits of the giants afflict, oppress, destroy, attack, do battle, and work destruction on the earth, and cause trouble: they take no food, but nevertheless
12 hunger and thirst, and cause offences. And these spirits shall rise up against the children of men and against the women, because they have proceeded from them.
The late Dr. Tom Hawkins, of Restoration in Christ Ministries, where he and his wife Diane, have made incredible contributions to the ministry of Satanic ritual abuse survivors and ministering to dissociative identity disorder, did a significant amount of research on the topic of the Nephilim spirits being demons. In Dr. Hawkins work on Cosmic Hierarchy, he writes,
We began examining the whole concept of two realms of spiritual beings. One was the usual demonic realm, which seems to include the lower level spiritual beings. Another was the higher level fallen angels, called celestial beings in Jude 1:8-10 (NIV). Over time we have begun to understand that celestial beings are a subcategory of the overall designation “cosmic beings”. While, admittedly, we don’t know the origin of demons, I now believe they are not “fallen angels”, but more likely the offspring of the Nephilim.[6]
The theological argument that follows here, and Dr. Hawkins addresses it subtly, is, who are the principalities, powers, and rulers with Satan? We now have two distinct spiritual beings. Terry Law, comments on this in his book, The Truth About Angels,
The only explanation that fits all the facts seems to be that some fallen angels transgressed by not only by taking on human bodies –as we know fallen angels sometimes do- but by operating in all the functions of those bodies, including sex. This transgression was much worse than even rebelling against God that they were chained in darkness before the flood or at the time of the flood.[7]
Like other magnificent mysteries of the Bible we’ll have to wait for our Glory 101 New Arrivals class in Heaven to get all the answers we now seek. I am sure the early church were having the same Theological arguments.  God is sovereign and doesn’t owe us an answer. Just remember, it is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings!

Enjoy!

Demonology – Nephilim and Evil Spirits

The Nephilim have always been a controversial piece to our Biblical history. Who were they and what were they? In the Bible the Nephilim make their grand and mysterious entrance in Genesis 6.

Genesis 6:2-4, we see another theological mystery, the sons of God.

that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose.
Then the Lord said, “ My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
Genesis 6:2-4

That's it for their grand entrance in the Bible. What I would like to address is the Nephilim and their role in demonology. There are several different schools of theological thought on what demons are. From my Benny Hinn library on deliverance, I have the sermons where Benny Hinn believes demons are a pre-Adamic race. When God wiped out the pre-Adamic race the spirits became demons. My personal belief, and from examining scripture closely, is that demons are fallen angels, and I will give my thoughts and experiences shortly. Then, there is another theology that has popped up which links the Nephilim to being demons. So we have several categories of possible roots of evil spirits, pre-Adamic spirits, fallen angels, and Nephilim hybrid spirits. All three cases surface in the different schools of deliverance and exorcism ministry.

Keep in mind the Bible is full of controversy on angels and demons. We have so many different schools of thought on what angels and demons are and aren't. I recently heard one pastor preach he didn't believer Lucifer was an angel and made the distinction between angel and cherub. We have the controversy in the scriptures, the Sadducees didn't believe in angels, demons or resurrection.

8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.Acts 23:8

Let's focus on the subject of the Nephilim and how they entered into the fray of controversy in demonology. The clues to this mystery are actually found in the New Testament. The Nephilim may be the source of reference in the books of Jude and 2 Peter.

Since I am from the school of thought that demons are fallen angels I will refer to them as such. In Jude and 2 Peter I believe we are clearly dealing with angels that rebelled against God. There is no chance of redemption for the angels that disobeyed God to his face and in the presence of His glory. Their fate was sealed the moment they embraced their sin.

For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment;
2 Peter 2:4

There is a complimentary scripture in Jude.

And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day,
Jude 6

However, I do believe in the book of 2 Peter and Jude, that the angels held in chains are the ones responsible for the Nephilim. It's my personal belief, and again, it's one of the many conversations I'll have with Jesus when I go on to my glory. At this point in time it's inconclusive.

The Book of Enoch Mystery

There is an interesting curiosity here in angelology, demonology and theology. Both Peter and Jude are referencing a book not included in the Bible, called the book of Enoch. Many Hebrew texts were lost in first century due to wars between the Jews and the Romans. The book literally disappeared off the face of the earth. In 1773, a British traveler and scholar, James Bruce, found copies of the text in a community of Jews and Christians in Northern Ethiopia. They were written in Coptic. Later, an ancient Greek version surfaced, and then ancient Hebrew fragments were discovered with the Dead Sea Scrolls. Both Peter and Jude were citing text from the book of Enoch. Keep in mind what we are about to examine raises more questions than answers but needs to be addressed in this discussion.
Jude is specifically citing the book of Enoch. How do we know this? A clue appears in Jude 14,15.

14 It was also about these men that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying, “ Behold, the Lord came with many thousands of His holy ones,
15  to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”
Jude 14-15

Jude refers to Enoch as prophet, who prophesied the Second Coming of Christ. Enoch is referenced in the book of Genesis in verses 5:18-24.1 He is mentioned in the listing of the generations of Adam. Six short verses in the family tree and then this verse.

24  Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
Genesis 5:24

There is no mention of Enoch the prophet with a messianic prophecy. Where did Peter and Jude get their information from? A matching text can be found in the book of Enoch. Again, a book not included in the Bible yet historically exists.

1Behold, he comes with ten thousands of his saints, to execute judgment upon them, and destroy the wicked, and reprove all the carnal for everything which the sinful and ungodly have done, and committed against him.
Enoch 1:9

What we have is a mystery or a theological puzzle that can't be resolved with the information we have on hand. As you can see, Jude, in Jude 14-15, is quoting Enoch 1:9.

Why is this important? If Jude and Peter are referencing the book of Enoch, which was in the synagogue in their time, we see another mystery surrounding the chained angels held in darkness. In Genesis 6:2-4, we see another theological mystery, the sons of God.

that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose.

Again, there is a parallel text in the book of Enoch, found in Enoch 6:2-4.

1 And it came to pass, after the children of men had increased in those days. Beautiful and comely daughters were born to them.
2 And the angels, the sons of the heavens, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: “Behold, we will choose for ourselves wives from among the children of men, and we will beget for ourselves children.”
Enoch 6:1-2

If the pieces of this puzzle match then we have the defining sin that created the Nephilim. Rebelling angels took for themselves earthly wives and polluted God's creation with their wicked family lines.
In Genesis 6, Moses tells us that Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations.

But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God.Genesis 6:8-9
Was Noah spared because he was a just man and his family line was pure from the demonic DNA? We have a case for the Nephilim and the flood being a result of angels leaving heaven to seek and conceive with human wives. The angels held in chains in Peter and Jude could possibly be detained to keep them out of God's creation. Most demons act as tempters, in this case. these demons offense was that they defiled creation itself. And for that reason they were exiled in chains into the darkness of the pit. The book of Enoch raises more questions then answers. Is it a missing book that should have been included in the Bible? Who knows? Again, it is as much a mystery in it's content as is the book of Tobit in the Roman Catholic Apocrypha. It is my personal belief that the Nephilim were the product of rebelling angels conceiving with earthly women. However, I don't believe the book of Enoch is the definitive piece to prove my theory. Theologians also believe the sons of God refer to the descendants of Seth and not referring to rebelling angels.

Nephilim and Evil Spirits

Now let's discuss where the belief that the Nephilim are the source of evil spirits on the earth. Again, it is found in the book of Enoch, chapter 15.

8 And now, the giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called evil spirits upon
9 the earth, and on the earth shall be their dwelling. Evil spirits have proceeded from their bodies; because they are born from men and from the holy Watchers is their beginning and primal origin;
Enoch 15:8-12

This is the key point the Nephilim spirit school of thought makes it's argument. I am not a Biblical scholar, it is times like this that I wish I had a PhD in theology. The fact of the matter is that these pieces simply don't fit. It is my belief that hybrid spirits roaming the earth is theologically impossible. This is the same reason I don't believe in ghosts nor have I encountered one in the nearly 500 cases of demonic activity M16 Ministries has been involved with. Our ministry team has worked in numerous cases involving the incubus and succubus demons. We have seen people get raped during deliverance prayer session by an unseen spirit. We have seen objects manifest from the stomach through witchcraft. Putting two and two together it doesn't take much more consideration that through sexual demons and witchcraft, DNA can be moved from a male and placed in a female. And there is a new life. Raise the child evil with no morality, and it's possible you have a Nephilim. Wickedness can taint DNA. The DNA can be manipulated but not created. We can manipulate DNA now and build better and illegal athletes, hence drug and hormone testing. An evil hybrid human is not beyond the scope of reasoning. The hybrid's will (part of the soul) can be raised and trained to be evil. However, the spirit comes from God. This is the part of logic which I find unsettling in the Nephilim spirits as being demons. God makes it clear how the process of death works. If these are evil created spirits that are part man, then they go to sheoul when they die. They don't linger on, just like spiritists believe our souls can linger on here on earth.

The book of Enoch sure explains a lot if it were true and accurate. But we don't know. I consider the book of Enoch to be an interesting piece of spiritual literature and history. But nothing more. It's one of those things I am going to have to have a conversation with Jesus about in Heaven. But I think I received the word of wisdom on this book loud and clear.

My Encounter with an Angel of Judgement

One of my most eye opening experiences and encounters with a demon happened on the Friday Night Strike, on the weekend of Father's day, in 2008. I remember this weekend specifically because my wife and I were attending a conference that weekend hosted by Georgian and Winnie Banov, Hiedi Baker, and Bill Johnson, in San Jose. So I am able to lock in the time frame for this experience I am going to present as my evidence for fallen angels being demons.

I had a team ministering on the streets of San Francisco. On the team there were three young women from a local church from the San Joaquin valley, and my son. We were praying for homeless people on the streets when this obnoxious man approached us. I was going through a weird spiritual season during this time of my life where the Holy Spirit was having evil spirits walk up to me and identify themselves. This loud mouth man approaches us and as he comes closer to us I notice I can only see the whites of his eyes. No pupils. He is walking down the street blabbering loudly with his eyes rolled in the back of his head. He approached our team and walked straight over to me. We were pretty much face to face when this spirit identified itself as an angel of judgement. I won't give the exact name, but it clearly identified itself as an angel. From the encounter I believe it was an angel of judgement waiting in the city. Now, I don't want you to go off the deep end and start saying the city is going to hell in a hand basket. This is not the case. I believe the angel is in waiting if there is no change of heart in the city. Working with some incredible homeless ministers, who live on the streets, we have witnessed in the past several years since then an incredible move of the Holy Spirit over the city. It's some exciting times in the city right now.

Now back to the angel of judgement story. These were my early days of God teaching me about deliverance ministry. I thought since this guy was demon possessed I could simply cast the demon out of this individual. I was filled with the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and so was my son. We tried to cast the demon out. Thank God for the Lord's Grace and Mercy! As my son and I tried to operate in the prophetic and get the demoniac's name, my son got a word of knowledge, Philip. We tried to no avail to cast out the evil spirit. So the man stepped aside from us and walked on down the street, with his eyes still rolled up in the back of his head, and we watched him walk away. As we turned around, the man, was NOW right in front of us again as if he had teleported. My son and I looked at each other and we looked at the demon possessed fellow. The guy strolled by us again. I looked over at the three young women who were with us and they were petrified. I know one of the women was a youth pastor. Needless to say, after several months of serving Night Strike we never saw their faces again after this incident. It freaked them out.

Now, the name Philip my son got as a word of knowledge, let me direct you to the book of Acts .
(8:26-40).

36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?”
37 Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” The eunuch answered, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”
38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him.
39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.
40 Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.
Acts 8:36-40
Philip was whisked away by the spirit. What we witnessed was a demonic imitation.

For this reason and many other experiences I strongly discount that the Nephilim are the source of evil spirits. The Nephilim are an enigma and make for an interesting study in the Bible. Especially, when the giants show up again the post Noah flood scriptures. I have seen on youtube where prophets are now prophesying about the return of the Nephilim and the plan of evil spirits. I don't believe this at all. Go ahead and throw tomatoes my way if you will. I have seen too much in the battlefield for me to think otherwise.
